How to Join the Fun in Western PA

The Western PA Steering Team is excited to help support another fantastic year of FIRST LEGO League fun through the Western PA Tournament Series and Championship!

Teams interested in participating in the Western PA Tournament Series and Championship must go through the following steps:

    • First, register your team with FIRSTRegister Team.
This step provides you with a team number, access to the challenge, the ability to purchase the field kit, and the opportunity to register for various FLL-related events (like the Western PA Tournament Series and Championship).

      • Important: for teams that want to participate in the Western PA Tournament Series and Championship please make sure that when you register you set your primary region to Pennsylvania-Southwest-Pittsburgh. If you select a different region, you will not receive information and updates on the Western PA Tournament Series
    • Second, order your Field Setup Kits and any Robot Kits and Accessories you might need.
All teams must pay for their team registration and have two screened coaches before they can order materials. Materials can also be ordered through the dashboard established at after you register your team and have your coaches go through the Youth Protection Screening.
    • Third, (In Mid August) Register for the Western PA Tournament Series and Championship
Teams purchase a season pass to one of our two divisions (OPEN or SCHOLASTIC) that allows them to participate in multiple events within Western PA.
Our OPEN Division is the traditional, full-scale experience open to all teams and is the most intensely competitive division. The OPEN Division also advances its champions to post season opportunities and is the path for teams interested in the GIA process.
Our SCHOLASTIC Division is for teams that are seeking the same set of experiences but in a less intensely competitive environment (that does not have the post-season pathway).  The scholastic division provides a venue for teams that are constrained in the total time they can invest in the challenge, or those looking to have 2 teams with different experience levels participating, or teams with more limited experience seeking to participate with other similarly situated teams.
Both divisions will be represented at every Western PA event including our Grand Championship (SCHOLASTIC competes on Saturday, OPEN competes on Sunday). In addition, we will be having a special class of recognition at events for teams composed entirely of elementary school aged students.
    • Fourth, Prepare to Sign Up for Specific Events Starting in early September (Date and Time TBA).  As the Event Schedule is finalized, discuss with your teams, what events you would like to aim to participate in.
      • Starting on (the Date and Time TBA), Event Selection will open and teams will be able to select their first choices for scrimmages to participate in.  In this first round, teams will get to select their first choice educational scrimmage and their first choice competitive scrimmage at  By limiting the number of events selected in the first round, teams get a better shot at their most preferred options.  Also, please note that only season pass holders will be able to sign up for the season events, so it will be useful to have taken care of that before the 7th as well.
      • On (a slightly later date and time TBA) all events will open fully and teams can then sign up for as many events as they would like that remain on a first come, first served basis.
    • Fifth, Get Ready for Some Fun!
Work on the challenge, try some things out and meet other teams at one of the early educational scrimmages.  These are designed to be working sessions for your team.  Then participate in some of the later, more competitive scrimmages to see how much you’ve improved and try to win awards.  Then get ready for the the full FLL experience… Robot, Project, Teamwork at the Western PA FLL Grand Championship.
